Traffic was moving against at midday Friday after crewsfinished cleaningup portions of Interstate 35 near Schertz following an early-morning fatal accident.
Schertz police confirmed that one person died in a crash on I-35 north of San Antonio.
The crash closed the northbound main lanes in the Schertz area for hours.
Police say the accident happened at about 4:45 a.m. and involved a Federal Express 18-wheeler and a small blue Dodge Charger.
Officers said the driver of the Charger, a man in his mid- to late-20s, died on impact. His name was not released. The 18-wheeler driver was OK and refused treatment.
Police had been diverting traffic to the northbound access road, but there were also alternate routes that could be used, including FM 3009 to FM 1103 on the south side of the interstate.
Because of the nature of the accident and also with the rubberneckers coming on the other side of the highway, which also caused another accident, TxDOT was called out to look at the spill, diesel fuel, and of course cleaning up diesel over the recharge zone, said Brad Bailey, public information officer for the Schertz Police Department.
Southbound traffic on I-35 was moving at a normal pace through the area by mid-morning, but earlier had been backed up as drivers were distracted by the accident scene.
