Pope Francis' thoughts on everything from homosexuality to female priests were released today in the Italian Jesuit magazine La Civilta Cattolica.
He said the Catholic Church's 1.2 billion followers should not focus so much on issues like abortion, gay marriage or contraception. He also said if the Catholic Churchfails to do this itwould be in danger of collapsing like a house of cards.
He went on to say thatCatholics should not interfere in the lives of homosexuals.Additionally, hemade it clear thatwhile women should playa greater role in the Church they cannot become priests.
Deb Myers is a gay Catholic who lives in San Antonio. She said that the Popehas takena step in the right direction but hasn't gone far enough.
The last three decades of the hierarchy of the Church has really created a lot of spiritual damage, said Myers. It's definitely a shift in attitude and approach towards the GLBT community.
Father Mark Leopold of the San Antonio Archdiocesesaid the content ofwhatPope Francis said is not a change for the Catholic Church.
In terms of the Church's official position it always has been one of welcoming and loving individuals, said Leopold.
