SANANTONIO-- The man accused of gunning down a Bexar County Sheriff's Sergeant in May of last year wants to fire his court appointed attorneys and hire his own lawyer.

42-year-old Mark Anthony Gonzales is facing a charge of capital murder for the death of Sgt. Kenneth Vann, a 25-year-veteran with the Bexar County Sheriff's Office.

Friday afternoon, the suspect appeared in Bexar County courtroom in an effort to seek new legal representation.

Gonzales passed a letter to Judge Mary Roman, specifically requesting to hire his own attorney.

He said he no longer wanted to be represented by defense attorneys Michael Gross and Mario Del Prado, who were both appointed by the court.

Judge Roman then expressed her respect for Gonzales's current legal team, and went on to say she won't approve any additional continuances to make up for lost preparation time for the defense, if and when Gonzales hires his own lawyer.

Judge Roman also said she assumes the state will be seeking the death penalty.

Gonzales's trial is tentatively set for August 7th.

He is currently being held on $1.5 million dollar bond at the Bexar County Jail.
