SAN ANTONIO -- Former Congressman Ciro Rodriguez announced Tuesday that he will be running for the newly-constructed 35th District.

Rodriguez, a Democrat, lost his seat in the 23rd District last year to Tea Party-backed Francisco Quico Canseco.

From his campaign headquarters on West Harding Boulevard, Rodriguez said he will focus his campaign on saving Medicare and Social Security for seniors.

And that's one of the reasons why I'm running now, making sure we secure those programs, not only for this generation of seniors, but future generations, he said.

The 35th district was just recently redefined. State Rep. Joaquin Castro, D-San Antonio, was originally expected to face U.S. Rep. Lloyd Doggett, D-Austin, in the race until Doggett was literally drawn out of the picture.

The new district takes up most of the city's east side and includes parts of Atascosa, Comal and Hays counties.

Bexar County Tax Collector Sylvia Romo has also expressed interest in running for the 35th District.
