SAN ANTONIO --- Its never been done before in south Texas. A well-known Mexican university is offering its first course to become an American citizen.
The National Autonomous University of Mexico is hoping to begin as soon as next week. The university's satellite branch is located at 600 Hemisfair Plaza Way.
According to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service, Texas ranks 4th in naturalizations each year.
Class will soon be in session. This course, however, is not your typical math or science.
We're really excited to be offering more resources for the community, said Jake Pacheco, Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico, UNAM.
UNAM, as its known, is a university based out of Mexico City. Pacheco said the university is taking its first step to prepare locals to become American citizens.
It's important to educate the community to give them that strength that power, said Pacheco.

The students will be prepared based on writing, reading and civics, said Pacheco.
It will all be taught by trained professionals from the university. UNAM hopes to ease students into the process and steer them away from a situation where they may be taken advantage of.
Pacheco said there are many scammers out there hoping to make quick cash.
It will just be a business that will promise a fast track when really the (process is long), said Pacheco.
The instructors are bilingual. Halfway through the course, students will sit down with an inspector from the U.S.C.I.S for a mock interview.
The special thing about this officer they are going to interview them with empathy because this is a person that has gone through the process, said UNAM representative.
The course will be offered every Tuesday from February 11th to April the 15th. Class is from 6am to 9pm. Its a 30 hour course costing $110.
