SAN ANTONIO -- When talking about crime there s no doubt murder is the most alarming of them all. So it may come with a shock to learn that murders are up significantly in San Antonio during this same time last year.

The murders that we have had have just been scattered all over the place -- no one particular part of the city, no particular time of the day, said San Antonio police Chief William McManus.

McManus admits homicide detectives have been busier this first quarter of the year compared to the same time last year. According to police statistics, the Alamo City had only seen 19 murders through this time in 2011. So far in 2012 the city has already seen 34 murders -- that s an increase of 15 homicides.

It concerns me, yes, McManus said. The numbers do concern me. One murder is too many. Double the amount we had last year is way, way too many.

However, the chief said it s almost impossible to predict the murders. Some have been very violent, like two weeks ago when police said a man in his 30s was shot at least 10 times. Then on Monday, detectives said a man in his 20s was shot at least five times. Such murders at least indicate to police that most of the murders aren t random.

Most of the murders that we ve had have been people who know each other, people who have gotten into an altercation, someone who has targeted someone, McManus said.

And even though the increase in murders have been spread throughout the entire city, the police chief said residents have nothing to fear.

San Antonio, despite the fact that the murder numbers are up, is a very safe city. Your tourists, people who live here and go to work every day have nothing to worry about, McManus said.
