SAN ANTONIO -- A new trend in weddings has sparked new life for funeral homes.
I can't tell you how many people have looked at that and said, 'Oh my gosh a wedding inside a funeral chapel, said Dick Tips, owner of Mission Park Funeral Chapels and Life Centers.
In part, due to lower-cost, higher-availability and often a more traditional chapel appearance than many new churches, Mission Park Funeral Chapels are among the growing number of funeral homes across the country that now host wedding ceremonies.
Tell me the difference between the ceremonies, explained Tips. It's a sacred event to have a funeral service. It is a sacred event to have a wedding.
However, while holding weddings at funeral chapelsis a new national trend, it s not a new idea in San Antonio.
Mission Park South Funeral Home hosted its first wedding in 1965.
Despite never advertising the service, Tips said every year his chapels host nearly 50 weddings.
We are seeing a lot more requests, especially inside the cemetery itself, said Tips.
While inside the cemetery may be too creepy for some, Tips said some couple like the idea of being close to their deceased parents or grandparents on their big day.
