SANANTONIO -- You always hear that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. But eating a big breakfast may not do good things for your waistline.
Big breakfasts can make your waistline bigger, too
A newly-published study in Nutrition Journal showed that people ate the same lunch and dinner regardless of what they had for breakfast.
Eggs. Oatmeal. Biscuits. Bacon. And in South Texas, the ever-popular breakfast taco. Can fueling up too much in the morning tip the scales? Apparently, yes.
Basically what they found is that people who had a really big breakfast ate more calories during the day, explained U.T. Health Science Center registered dietitian Sue Cunningham, Ph.D.
Despite the notion that eating a big breakfast might keep you from being hungry later, the new study showed that s not really true. And the calories can add up.
There needs to be about 20 percent to 25 percent of your total calories for the day as breakfast, Cunningham said.
In the study, a big breakfast resulted in a total increase of about 400 more calories eaten in the course of the day. So while an egg might be a good choice, a three-egg omelet with cheese might be too much. Still, experts say you should strive for balance when you break your fast.
As a minimum, breakfast should include a reliable source of lean protein and a source of fiber, Cunningham stated.
And to fuel your metabolism, don t skip breakfast to save calories.
It s not physiologically sound to not eat breakfast, Cunningham added. We are meant to eat breakfast.
Keep this in mind: If you ate a big breakfast every day that added 400 calories to your diet, that could add up to an additional 40 pounds over the course of a year.
