Karen Grace joined the KENS 5 Eyewitness News team in 2005. In 2007, Karen was named weekend anchor for the 5 p.m., 5:30 p.m., 6 p.m., and 10 p.m. newscasts. Karen Grace was born and raised here in San Antonio and is proud to be working for the news station she grew up watching! Karen is currently an adjunct professor at the University of the Incarnate Word for the Summer of 2013. Since 2007, Karen has also been an adjunct professor at Our Lady of the Lake University, teaching communications courses. Karen earned a Master of Science in Journalism from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois. She also attended Our Lady of the Lake University, where she majored in Communications Arts and Psychology and graduated magna cum laude (with a minor in English). In 2008, Karen was honored with a Spirit Award by the Top Ladies of Distinction, Inc., San Antonio Metropolitan Chapter. In 2006, Karen was honored as a Northside Independent School District "Pillar of Fairness," and was featured on more than 500 posters districtwide. Karen also graduated from William Howard Taft High School and remains a proud Raider and former JROTC member. In 2001, Karen was honored with a Meredith Graduate Fellowship and interned full time at KPHO in Phoenix, Arizona. After completing graduate school, Karen spent three years at WCBD-TV in Charleston, South Carolina, where she was the Weekend Anchor/Reporter. In 2004, she was recognized by Skirt! Magazine as one of the "Top 10 Women to Watch!" She is an active member of the National Association of Black Journalists and was recognized as "Who's Who in Black San Antonio" in 2010. The S.A. Crime Coalition also has recognized Karen for her excellence in crime reporting. In Karen's "spare" time she loves teaching, speaking at schools and volunteering at charity events. She has mentored three high school students as part of the Independent Study Mentorship program at Northside Independent School District. For her, nothing is more rewarding than recognizing the talents of a young student and helping them build the confidence to pursue their dream. Karen's multiracial heritage also inspired her to write a children's book.
