Without Tony, Manu, & Pau, Spurs rally to beat Mavs in Dallas

DALLAS (AP) -- Patty Mills scored 15 of his team-high 23 points in the fourth quarter and Kawhi Leonard added 21 points, helping the San Antonio Spurs rally for a 94-87 win over the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday night.

San Antonio became just the third team to start the season 11-0 on the road, following last year's Warriors (14-0) and the 1969-70 Knicks (12-0).

Wesley Matthews had a season-high 26 points for the Mavericks, and Harrison Barnes added 17.

Dallas had a 60-47 lead in the third quarter after a 13-0 run in which the Spurs went 13 consecutive possessions and nearly seven minutes without a point.

The Mavericks still led by eight with seven minutes to play, but Mills hit his first of three huge 3s in the quarter to start an 11-2 run. Leonard scored seven points in the run, and his 3 with 4:23 to play gave the Spurs their first lead since early in the third quarter at 80-79. Leonard had 18 points in the second half.

With his team leading by one, Mills hit a 3 with 3:04 to play. After Matthews answered with a 3, Mills dialed up another and then hit a long jumper to make it 90-84 with 1:31 left.

The Mavericks lost to the Spurs 96-91 on Nov. 21, a game after which San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said his team showed ''a lack of humility, a lack of respect for the opponent.''

Popovich made wholesale substitutions midway through each of the first two quarters of this one, with only Leonard returning to action in either quarter.

San Antonio built a 12-point lead in the second quarter but a late Mavs run cut the deficit to 43-40 at halftime. Barnes had 13 points and Matthews 12 in the first half.

Mavericks: Devin Harris returned after missing the first 16 games due to a right big toe sprain suffered in the team's final preseason game. He played 11 minutes and did not score. Barea) have combined to play only 19 games.

MISSING DIRK

The Mavericks announced Tuesday that forward Dirk Nowitzki would miss at least two games with his sore right Achilles tendon. Nowitzki has played only five of the team's 17 games this year and missed the teams' previous meeting in San Antonio nine days ago. Popovich expressed disappointment that the Mavericks star was not available once again.

''He's not just a beautiful player to watch, but his competitiveness is infectious,'' Popovich said. ''He takes every game seriously. He knows how to win; he knows how to lose. He's just a class act. Everything is more whole when he's around, that's for sure.''
