A familiar face is returning to the San Antonio Spurs as the organization announced on Friday that Monty Williams will be taking over at the VP of basketball operations.
Williams' plan to join the Spurs' staff in San Antonio was first reported by ESPN's Marc Stein back in July.
USA Basketball assistant coach Monty Williams is expected to join the San Antonio Spurs' staff next season in a TBD role, league sources say— Marc Stein (@ESPNSteinLine) July 30, 2016
Williams, a former Spurs player, has had several jobs across the NBA including coaching positions with the Trail Blazers, Pelicans, and Thunder.
His last stop was in Oklahoma City, but he took several months off following the tragic death of his wife in a car accident.
Williams returned to coaching at the 2016 Rio Olympics for Team USA. He and Kevin Durant have a special relationship that started with Williams' time as an assistant coach in Oklahoma City.
