SAN ANTONIO -- Well, looky here.

With four weeks left in the regular season, Lanier sits atop the District 28-5A standings after knocking off two-time defending champion Sam Houston 27-21 last Friday night.

Running back Christian Cervantes helped key the victory, rushing for 127 yards and two touchdowns on 25 carries. Quarterback J.D. Boone also scored two TDs on runs of 4 and 11 yards.

Lanier, which jumped out to a 14-0 lead, had to repel a scoring threat in the closing seconds to secure its fourth consecutive victory after an 0-2 start.

The Voks, 4-2 overall and 4-0 in 28-5A play, moved into the KENS 5 Sub-6A rankings for the first time this season, checking in at No. 10. Lanier leads second-place Brackenridge (4-1) by only a half-game in the district race. Edison (3-1) and Highlands (3-1) are tied for third.
