KENS 5 high school football rankings: O'Connor off to fast start

SAN ANTONIO -- O’Connor football coach David Malesky said in the preseason that his team this year had the potential to be as good as the 2012 Panthers squad that went 12-2 and reached the state semifinals.

It’s still early but the Panthers are looking good. They routed MacArthur 54-20 in their opener and rolled past Churchill 49-12 last Friday night.

O’Connor, which inched up No. 4 in the KENS 5 area high school Class 6A rankings, will find out just how good it is when it plays No. 2 Steele on Saturday night at Farris Stadium. Steele is coming off a heartbreaking 59-56 double-overtime loss to Austin Lake Travis and hasn’t dropped two games in a regular season since 2009.

Steele (1-1) cruised past the Panthers 52-27 in Week 3 last year. O’Connor went on finish 8-4 and reach the second round of the playoffs.

Judson moved to the top spot in the KENS 5 Class 6A rankings, trading places with Steele after dismantling Brennan 55-13. Smithson Valley (1-0) is No. 3 and (1-1) Clemens is No. 5. Ranked No. 6 through No. 10, in order, are Johnson (2-0), Reagan (1-1), Wagner (2-0), Southwest (2-0) and New Braunfels (1-1).

Boerne Champion (2-0) and Alamo Heights (2-0) remained 1-2 in the Sub-Class 6A rankings. Somerset (2-0), Uvalde (2-0) and Harlandale (2-0), in that order, round out the top five.
