IRVING, Texas - Under no circumstances will Wade Phillips be removed as the Cowboys head coach this season, owner Jerry Jones said Thursday morning.
Phillips wouldn't have been fired had the Cowboys lost Sunday at winless Kansas City, Jones said.
"We've got a chance to get a lot of things done," Jones said during his weekly radio interview on "The Fan" KRLD-FM (105.3). "And we've got a lot of football left to play, and we've got some good people that not only can play it but coach it."
Jones has never made an in-season coaching change since buying the team in 1989. Phillips' contract is up after this season, though the club has an option to bring him back in 2010.
Jones pointed to the NFC East rival New York Giants as an example of patience paying off.
"Two years ago the Giants were seemingly not in disarray, but they were in trouble," Jones said. "It was also absolutely expected that something was going to happen with the coach, [Tom] Coughlin. ... Well, that same year they won the Super Bowl. You've got to be mindful that this is a long, long journey. ... A lot can happen from the beginning to the end."
