IRVING - Tony Romo will be available when the Cowboys practice Wednesday.

Romo underwent an MRI exam Monday that revealed a sprained right ankle, although not the dreaded high ankle sprain that often lingers longer.

"I don't know that it is anything serious," coach Wade Phillips said.

Romo suffered the injury while avoiding a blitz in Sunday's 34-21 win at Tampa Bay, but he did not miss a snap and said after the game that he was fine.

In between series he had his ankle re-taped, and after the game it was wrapped in ice.

Romo skipped Monday's conditioning work because of the swelling in his ankle. Players are off today, but Romo will probably be in for treatment and meet as usual with assistant coach Jason Garrett to discuss the game plan.

Last season, Romo missed three games with a fractured pinky finger and also played through a gash on his chin and lower back and rib injuries.

If needed, backup quarterback Jon Kitna said he is ready.

"My antennas were up all day [Sunday]," Kitna said. "You're always one play away. You can never let your guard down and settle in and think, 'Ah, I'm not playing today.' It's not a way you can be, but I think he's going to be fine."

Jones could be limited

The bruised quadriceps that running back Felix Jones suffered in the first quarter limited his playing time Sunday and could limit his work this week.

With Jones banged up, Tashard Choice saw more action than expected and Miles Austin returned a kickoff. Phillips said Marion Barber took part in 30 plays, Jones in 15 and Choice in seven.

"[Jones] would've been in there more, but not necessarily all the third downs," Phillips said. "We have different plans for different games."

Sensabaugh's rib OK

Gerald Sensabaugh said his injured rib was feeling better and that he expects to play in Sunday's home opener against the New York Giants.

"Something is bent, I'll put it that way," said Sensabaugh, who had an MRI on Monday. "I don't know what it is, but it's nothing serious."

Sensabaugh was hurt when he collided with wide receiver Michael Clayton. He said he felt he was unable to protect himself because of the league's new rule regarding hits on receivers above the shoulder.

"I thought about that, where you get fined and a 15-yard penalty," Sensabaugh said. "I tried to hit him in the chest area. If you hit them high in their helmets, their heads jolt back and their body will go there. If you hit them in the chest area, you kind of get a stalemate. It's like running into a brick wall.

"A lot of times you want to go really high on a guy. But they took that out of the game. So I guess we're going to have some big collision, some crazy collisions going on this year."

Hodge has knee surgery

Already out for the season on injured reserve, rookie linebacker Stephen Hodge had microfracture surgery on his left knee.

Hodge missed most of the off-season workouts after having knee surgery and took part in a limited part of training camp and one preseason game. The Cowboys have had success with players undergoing this type of surgery, with linebacker Kevin Hardy and center Al Johnson.

Rookie linebacker Brandon Williams is expected to undergo reconstructive surgery on his knee within the next two weeks. He tore his anterior cruciate ligament in the preseason and is on injured reserve.

Briefly

Phillips said four players needed intravenous fluids after Sunday's game. ... Phillips said the timing of the Razorback play, in which Choice was lined up as quarterback, was thrown off by an early snap.

Staff writer Bill Nichols contributed to this report.
