Defeated in its football season opener last week, the University of the Incarnate Word will try to rebound against Eastern New Mexico in the Lone Star Conference opener for both teams at 7 p.m. Saturday at Benson Stadium.
East Central Oklahoma beat UIW 31-21, stunning the Cardinals with two interception returns for touchdowns that gave the Greyhounds a 14-0 lead in the first quarter.
New Mexico Highlands defeated Eastern New Mexico 43-36 in overtime last week on the Greyhounds’ home field.
This will be the second meeting between UIW and Eastern New Mexico. The Greyhounds beat the Cards 35-30 in 2009 at Greyhound Stadium, scoring with 1:53 left. That was the inaugural season for UIW, which finished 5-5 as an NCAA Division II independent.
The Cards moved into the Lone Star Conference last year, going 3-8 overall and 2-7 in league play.
UIW plays Lamar next Saturday night in Beaumont.
