SLIDESHOW: Xtreme bull-riding can be a dirty and risky business

For a $100,000 purse, brave souls risked their lives competing in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association's Xtreme Bulls Tour held Saturday afternoon at the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo. Organizers said the event brings in ProRodeo's best bull riders. They touted it as a possible "grudge match." (You might even want to say "grunge" match, when you consider how the riders are tossed about and thrown unceremoniously from the backs of the rampaging steers. They rise from the arena floor, casually brushing off the dirt, but the marks go a bit deeper, I believe.)
Eleven bull-riding qualifiers from the 2011 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas sat astride the rankest PRCA bulls - But not for long. Seconds count in this match. Altogether 50 riders - 10 from Texas - took part in the event. The best 12 will return for the finals.
