HONDO, TX -- Years ago it was common to look up and see this giant piercing the skies, but not anymore. The only WWII era B-29 bomber still able to fly touched down in Hondo bringing with her a special chance for South Texans to take a ride of a lifetime.
On Tuesday, October 25, 2011 – Aircraft Commander David Oliver and the Commemorative Air Force crew flew the only B-29 bomber still flying from Austin to Hondo, Texas for a special showing.
"FIFI" as she is known is available for tours and flights at the South Texas Regional Airport in Hondo through 1 p.m. Friday. For more information: http://www.cafb29b24.org or http://www.rideb29.com
"FIFI" and her crew will then liftoff from Hondo and head to Randolph Airforce Base for this weekend's airshow.
The Boeing B-29 Superfortress was a backbone of U.S. Military stretching from World War II through the Korean Conflict until it’s eventual retirement in the 1960’s.
The most famous B-29 mission occurred in August 1945 when the Enola Gay dropped an atomic bomb over Hiroshima, Japan.
Although thousands of aircraft were built only a few remain today with "FIFI' known as the only B-29 in the world still able to take to the skies.
The Commemorative Air Force, a non-profit organization, maintains and flies this last airworthy B-29 to various events and airshows across the U.S.
