We experienced a "first" this week for our KENS 5 SACU ExCEL Award winner. News of the award literally bowled her over.

We surprised Coach Terri O'Bryant during gym class at Converse Elementary in the Judson Independent School District with the Golden Apple Award. Her students were so excited, they swarmed the coach and toppled her with hugs.

But with this teacher, tumbling is actually part of her class.

It's hard to find a more enthusiastic group of students than those at Converse Elementary.

"We're sitting in the classroom all day just waiting for P.E. because that's when we can run and play," said fifth grade student Jayreyell Orasco.

And while the students are running and playing, Coach O'Bryant is working in core curriculum.

"I integrate core subjects like math and science into physical activity," O'Byrant said.

"She helps us with almost everything we might have trouble with, like math, science and English," said fifth grader Reginald Robinson.

Her goals for her students are to live healthy lives with purpose.

"We work on building integrity with good purpose and commitment. All these are keys to a leader and that's what I try and get these kids to be."

"I decided a long time ago I wanted to be a teacher, it was born in me. I crave to teach," explained O'Bryant.

But this award-winning teacher is just getting started.

"I raised my three kids first," she said. "I've only been teaching seven years. I have a lot of catching up to do! For seven years I've been giving it my all and I plan to do it for many many more years."

That's something that will have students cheering for many years to come.
