Sarah Lucero

News Anchor / Reporter

Sarah Lucero joined the KENS 5 news team in 2001. The native San Antonian, who graduated from Robert E. Lee High School, now co-anchors KENS 5 Eyewitness News at 6 and 10 p.m. with Jeff Vaughn.

Raised in a bilingual English and Spanish household, Sarah grew up with a love for language. She graduated from St. Mary's University with a B.A. in English communications, and before joining the KENS 5 staff in 1998 as a 5 p.m. anchor and reporter, she worked for WBBM-TV, the CBS affiliate in Chicago and at KWEX-TV, the Univision affiliate in San Antonio. Sarah strives to find and bring to viewers the stories they care about, news reports that affect the community the most. Sarah won her first Emmy for a KENS 5 special report about women behind bars. She spent the night in a county jail and spoke with the women, many of whom had spent most of their lives incarcerated.

Sarah served on the board of Arts San Antonio and has been involved with the American Heart Association, as well as HeartGift San Antonio, the San Antonio Association of Hispanic Journalists and the St. Mary's University's Scholarship Fund and Girls, Inc. She has also received numerous honors, including induction into the San Antonio Women Hall of Fame, recognition from the March of Dimes as a "Hero for the Tiniest Babies," an American Heart Association Gratitude Award for exceptional volunteer service, La Prensa's Hispanic Heritage Award, the Inspire Award from the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, and the Broadcast Media award for Outstanding Service by the Texas Council of Child Welfare Boards.

In her free time, Sarah can be found training for marathons, and half-Ironman triathlon competitions. She completed her very first 70.3 Ironman in Galveston in April of 2010. She ran her sixth marathon in April 2009. It was none other than the Boston Marathon. She finished in just over four hours, but her best time is 3:39:40 in the Phoenix Rock and Roll Marathon. She also rode in the Valero Ride to the River MS 150 in San Antonio with her cycling team, the Hill's Angels, raising money in the fight against Multiple Sclerosis. She enjoys downloading Top 40 music to her iPod for her training (Katy Perry and Black Eyed Peas are among her favorite artists), and spending time with her husband, a local heart surgeon, and their two sons.
