KABUL (AP) — Afghan President Hamid Karzai has promised to fight corruption after his fraud-plauged re-election but there are indications Kabul will resist international prescriptions on how to do that.
Afghanistan's Foreign Ministry said today that the top U.N. official in the country went too far by giving instructions on how to rid the government of corruption and warlords.
It was strongest indication yet of Karzai administration resistance to outside influences on how to rein in corruption or regional power brokers who often wield more power than the government.
A spokesman for Karzai argued that the president has strengthened Afghanistan by including even his opponents, such as some warlords, in his government.
The U.N. Security Council yesterday joined calls for Afghan government reform.
