BAGHDAD (AP) — A prisoner being transferred from jail to a Baghdad court opened fire on his escorts Thursday, killing two guards and wounding two before fatally shooting himself, Iraqi officials said.
Police officials said it was not clear how the Sunni inmate obtained a gun. They said he opened fire as he was about to step into a van that was to take him to a nearby court for a verdict in his trial on terror charges.
The inmate turned the gun on himself right after shooting the guards, the officials said.
The shooting came two days after riots at two Baghdad prisons wounded 13 inmates
Elsewhere in Baghdad, gunmen killed an Interior Ministry official in a drive-by-shooting Thursday, police said.
Hospital medics confirmed the casualties. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to speak to the media.
Violence in Iraq has dropped sharply since the height of sectarian fighting in 2006 and 2007, but bombing and shooting attacks are still common.
