WEBSTER, Texas (AP) -- Police say two reindeer hit the ground running near Houston after part of a trailer hauling them popped open and the animals jumped out.

Webster police received several phone calls Wednesday about the runaway reindeer, which are part of a petting zoo, dashing near Interstate 45.

Chief Ray Smiley on Thursday said a latch on a ramp that's part of the trailer came loose, and before the driver could slow down the ramp had opened.

Smiley told The Associated Press that he dispatched officers to guide traffic away from the reindeer as the owner managed to catch and reload the creatures.

The reindeer weren't hurt.
