Cockfighting Ring
POOLVILLE, Texas -- The Parker County Sheriff's Department took 169 people to jail Saturday in a cockfighting ring bust. The majority were charged with gambling or cruelty to animals.
More than 100 roosters were seized during the bust and taken to the animal shelter in Weatherford. Authorities also found dead roosters and others with injuries so severe they'll have to be euthanized.
A hearing is set for Monday to determine who gets custody of the birds.
At least 10 children were also on the property during the bust. Child Protective Services has custody of them.
The sheriff's department said the property owner, 46-year-old Roy Dale Saxton, was running the illegal operation and was on parole for a previous crime.
Cockfighting is a felony in Texas.
