HUMBLE—The tennis coach at Atascocita High School is under fire for allegedly engaging in an inappropriate sexual relationship with a female student.
School officials placed the coach on administrative leave after learning of the allegations on Nov. 6. The coach stepped down from his position a few days later.
Officials said the assistant coach also resigned but he was not accused of violating any policies. His resignation allows the district to give the coaching staff what officials called a new face.
Evidence in the case has been turned over to Humble Police. Detectives have launched an investigation but, so far, no one has been arrested or charged with a crime.
Humble Independent School District spokesperson Jamie Mount called the allegations very serious and released the following statement:
“Humble ISD has zero-tolerance for inappropriate relationships between teachers and students. The district cooperates with law enforcement for the safety and welfare of our students and police are investigating.”
Local parents and former students reacted strongly to the news.
“It’s disgusting and vile,” said Zack Miro, who graduated from the high school two years ago. “I went there and hearing about it is just terrible.”
“It’s sad for everyone,” said Loyce Manahan. “If he’s guilty, that’s heartbreaking. But if he’s not guilty, then it’s just devastating.”
The coach was hired by the school district in August of 2010.
The district has already made arrangements to hire a new coach for the tennis team.
