HOUSTON—The emotional debate over the abortion issue is about to hit home. Anti-abortion groups will begin protesting Thursday at an 80,000 square -foot facility Planned Parenthood is planning to move into.
Those anti-abortion groups are calling the building an abortion “super center,” even though Planned Parenthood says it will be used for much more. The lead protester just flew into town from the nation’s capital.
“I believe Houston should not be known as the city that had the largest abortion clinic in the nation and in the Western Hemisphere,” said The Call to Conscience President Lou Engle.
Planned Parenthood says that it services about 35 counties in Southeast, Texas and its needs have outgrown the Midtown building it is currently housed in.
Planned Parenthood now plans to move to a building located in the 4600 block of Gulf Freeway. The new facility, Flagship Health Center, plans to “provide our clients with a comfortable and secure environment for excellent healthcare.”
The new facility was an old bank building Planned Parenthood bought back in 2006. The six-story building is still under construction, but in a few months, it will become Planned Parenthood’s regional headquarters.
Planned Parenthood says they will also provide medical services including clinics for HIV, research and abortion.
“It’s time to subpoena the conscience of the nation,” said Engle.
Engle took his campaign online and got nationwide attention.
Some protestors say they plan to show up Thursday, but Planned Parenthood says those who do will find “no trespassing” signs posted.
