TEMPLE, Texas (AP) — A federal investigation found that nearly 700 pieces of mail sat undelivered in the Temple post office last July, more than half of it first class.
The Inspector General's office for the U.S. Postal Service investigated from July to October 2009 and found the mail sat undelivered in Temple the week of July 24-29. Investigators also found mail delayed or discarded at Temple's main post office from February to May 2009. More than 3,600 pieces of delayed mail was found in a visit to a Killeen post office on March 4.
The Temple Daily Telegram obtained the report under the U.S. Freedom of Information Act.
Inspector General's spokesman Dan Mihalko says the investigation resulted from whistleblower complaints and questions from U.S. Sen. John Cornyn. Postal Service spokesman Sam Bolen says "appropriate action" was taken with all employees involved.
