MCALLEN, Texas (AP) — A flying state trooper opened fire on a vehicle filled with suspected illegal immigrants, killing two people in the vehicle and wounding another.
Katherine Cesinger of the Texas Department of Public Safety tells The Monitor of McAllen (http://bit.ly/TjaIid) that the DPS aircraft was called to help after a state game warden tried and failed to stop the vehicle Thursday afternoon.
The trooper, who is a sharpshooter, opened fire on the vehicle — as Cesinger says DPS policy allows. The vehicle stopped on Farm Road 2221, seven miles north of La Joya (HOY'-yuh) and about 70 miles northwest of Brownsville.
Cesinger says three wounded suspects were found inside, two of whom died. Six others were detained, and a search is on for others who fled.
