EDINBURG, Texas (AP) — A South Texas sheriff's deputy has been fired after investigators say he was arrested for buying cocaine from an undercover officer.

Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Trevino says Deputy Albert Cortez was off duty when he arrested early Tuesday on a cocaine possession charge. Cortez allegedly bought the cocaine while outside a convenience store in Alamo.

Cortez is free on a $10,000 personal recognizance bond. Trevino says Cortez was fired after his arraignment Tuesday.

No phone number could immediately be located Wednesday for Cortez.
