AMARILLO, Texas (AP) — A jury has sentenced an Amarillo homebuilder to 45 years in prison for murder in the 2010 death of his estranged wife.

The Potter County jury decided on Paul David Gillette's punishment Monday afternoon after finding him guilty of murder on Friday. Authorities say the 49-year-old strangled 44-year-old Sherry Gillette to death on Aug. 22, 2010, outside their home west of Amarillo.

The Amarillo Globe-News (http://bit.ly/NsQK4D) reports Gillette testified in his own defense last week that he didn't mean to kill his wife but was defending himself from her attack. Her body was later found in a sport utility vehicle parked in their garage.

Sherri Gillette filed for divorce months before her death.
