HOUSTON (AP) — A veteran Houston member of the U.S. House of Representatives has revealed what had been a little-known, yearlong battle with breast cancer.
In a statement issued Friday, Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee said, "Now, I am cancer free."
The Houston Democrat said she had been diagnosed with breast cancer last year. She submitted to a treatment regimen of surgery, chemotherapy, radiation and other tactics that cost her, among other things, her hair.
She said she recently completed her last course of treatment. She thanked her doctors and the staffs of M.D. Anderson Cancer Center and St. Luke's Hospital for their care. She urged all women to learn all they can about the disease and seek preventative care.
