SAN ANGELO, Texas (AP) — San Angelo police say an officer responding to a domestic disturbance call shot and killed a suspect who tried to strangle him.

Police spokeswoman Tracy Gonzalez said in a news release that the officer was treated at a local hospital for injuries and released following the early Sunday morning incident.

The San Angelo Standard-Times (bit.ly/P7Vng6) reports that police said the officer was trying to take the suspect into custody when the suspect began attacking him to the point he started to lose consciousness. Police say the officer was then able to fire his weapon.

Police did not release the ages or names of the officer or the suspect.

Texas Department of Public Safety will take over the investigation.

The suspect was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.
