HOUSTON (AP) — An elderly man has been reported as Houston's first death of the year from the West Nile virus.

Meanwhile, an elderly person also has been reported as the sixth West Nile death of the year in Dallas County.

The Houston Health and Human Services Department website shows an unidentified southwest Houston man between the ages of 75 and 84 was reported on Wednesday to city health officials.

Meanwhile, the Dallas County Health and Human Services Department reported Friday a northern Irving resident in their 80s had become the county's sixth West Nile death.

Texas, especially around the Dallas area, has seen the bulk of the nation's cases. Mosquitoes spread the virus from birds to people. One in 150 infected people develop severe symptoms including neck stiffness, disorientation, coma and paralysis.
