TEXAS CITY, Texas (AP) — Federal officials say an agreement's reached for the cleanup of a former waste-disposal site in Texas City.
The Justice Department and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said Friday that the agreement will result in a $56.4 million cleanup of the Malone Service Co. Superfund site.
The settlement, subject to court approval, would require 27 companies to clean up the site, pay the EPA $900,000 toward past and future costs and reimburse Texas for almost $800,000 in past costs. Seventy-six entities that shipped 1.62 percent of the waste, including the United States, will resolve liability by paying cash to the group of 27.
The Malone Service Co. operated the oil and chemical disposal facility from around 1964 to 1996, with hundreds of entities sending about 481 million gallons of waste.
