SAN ANTONIO -- Morgan's Wonderland is expanding. A new waterpark will be the first of its kind by allowing all individuals with any kind of disability to enjoy the water under the Texas sun.
Morgan's Inspiration Island will be located right next to Morgan's Wonderland and it will be the world's first ultra-accessible splash park. The plans for the park have been years in the making. It will overlook the 8-acre catch-and-release fishing lake.
"Guests of all ages, no matter what your age, no matter what your need. Whether you be special needs or no need at all, everyone can come together in a park of inclusion," said Gordon Hartman, CEO of the Gordon Hartman Family Foundation.
"It will be the first ultra accessible waterpark that's ever been built. Those who have special needs and those who don't have special needs will join together and play, but those who may have a special needs, whether it be physical or cognitive, will be able to enjoy every element of this park. There will be no limitations," he said.
Hartman added, "If you notice at Morgan's Wonderland what was important to us is that it look like any other park. It's a park of inclusion. It's not a park for special needs. We've taken that same concept here with Morgan's Inspiration Island and simply added water."
The park will have a tropical theme, and will include a river boat adventure ride and five water play areas. Every part of the park will also be wheelchair accessible, just like Morgan's Wonderland.
Because so much equipment must be installed underground before the splash park can take shape above ground, the opening is about a year and a half away. Right now the spring of 2017 is the target date.
