Balcones Heights PD: 2 schools on lockdown after suspect tries to run over officer

School lockdown near Balcones Heights

BALCONES HEIGHTS, Texas -- An incident in Balcones Heights Tuesday morning prompted lockdowns at two schools in the area.

Balcones Heights officials originally reported to KENS 5 that one of their officers was shot at by a suspect. They later amended the report and said that the suspect actually tried to run the officer over with a vehicle during a traffic stop.

The incident took place around 10 a.m. near the Unitarian Church when the officer pulled the suspect over. The suspect then attempted to run the officer over in what police said was a stolen car, before taking off on foot.

The report quickly prompted lockdowns at Dellview Elementary and St. Gregory the Great nearby.

Police from Balcones Heights and San Antonio were using a helicopter and dogs to scour a wooded area and an underground culvert.

Police were warning commuters that traffic may be stalled in the area while they continued to search. Police said the lockdowns were a precaution and were advising parents that kids were safe.
