SAPD: 'Hobbit' actor arrested, accused of assault while in S.A. for Comic Con

SAN ANTONIO -- San Antonio police arrested Hobbit actor Manu Bennett overnight on a misdemeanor assault charge. Bennett, 45, is in San Antonio for the Alamo City Comic Con at the time of the arrest, according to multiple social media posts.

Bennett is an actor and director who played Azog in the popular Hobbit trilogy. Alamo City Comic Con's website lists him as a celebrity guest.

According to a records search with the Bexar County Magistrate's Office, Bennett is charged with assault causing bodily injury. Booking records for Bennett indicate he was taken into custody early Sunday, following a physical altercation.

A spokesperson for SAPD also said the original call came out as an "assault in progress" at the Grand Hyatt hotel downtown.

Bennett was held on $1,600 bond.

Bexar County Magistrate's Office records show Bennett was released from jail around 1 p.m. Sunday.
