SAN ANTONIO -- On its way from California to Florida in preparation for its first operational mission, Columbia stopped at Kelly AFB on the back of a specially outfitted Boeing 747 in 1981.
Part of the 747 crew ferrying Columbia was Major Dick Scobee, a former San Antonian who had trained at Kelly AFB and later perished while commanding the Space Shuttle Challenger in 1986.
In this clip from the KENS 5 video vault - Channel 5 Eyewitness News reporter Gary DeLaune narrates
live coverage of Columbia's departure from Kelly AFB.
