1979: Sniper fires into Battle of Flowers crowds
Ida Attaberry barricaded himself inside his RV and began randomly firing into the crowd who had gathered for the parade along Broadway Rd. A standoff occurred and by the time the bullets stopped flying - four people, including Attaberry were dead.

On its way to Florida in preparation for its first operational mission, Columbia stopped at Kelly AFB on the back of a Boeing 747. On this trip was Dick Scobee, a former San Antonian who would later perish in the Challenger disaster.

Never had parts of Bandera and Comfort seen so much water in so little time. A storm system associated with Tropical Storm Amelia unleashed a torrent of devastating flash floods. More than 22 inches of rain forced residents to flee for their lives.
