Governor Rick Perry won the Republican Party's nomination for Texas governor.
Perry won with 52 percent of the vote, avoiding a runoff. In his victory speech at his watch party at the Salt Lick in Driftwood, Texas, Perry acknowledged the support of his wife of 28 years, Anita Perry.
He called his victory a "very important moment in our party's history."
He also said he thanked Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison for her kindness when she called to concede the election to him.
He said he accepted her offer to help unite the Republican Party as they move forward.
Forward here means the fight with Democratic nominee Bill White for Texas governor. White held an 85 percent lead against his competition on Tuesday.
