Political scavenger hunt gets college students engaged in election day

Class engages students in election 2016

SAN ANTONIO - Polling places and political camps in San Antonio will see college students scrambling to knock off a list of items from a scavenger hunt. It's not a prank. In fact, the group is trying to win a class assignment  about elections.

Dr. Robert Marbut said this was a good way to get his class engaged in the political process from nearly every angle. Marbut created the scavenger hunt in 2000. The competition has become more elaborate for the students of National government and Intro to sociology at Northwest Vista College. He shares the instructional duties with Kara Paige.

Students have to gather as many items as possible from a list of almost 50 things. 49 students have divided into as many as seven teams who try to create a victory plan for a day long hunt.

Each item accrued is worth points. The political manifest ranges from campaign buttons of presidential candidates to attending a watch party.

"I believe this experience  is hands on experience rather than running through the textbook," Julia Lieck said.

Sixty percent of a team must participate to get the highly sought after extracurricular assignment points. The hunt also comes with individual points too.

Marbut said the Northwest Vista class, normally. does the hunt every election within the school year.

Here's the class' list and points available for 2016:
