NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Mitt Romney is pressing Newt Gingrich for more details about his ethical problems as House speaker.

At a campaign stop in Gilbert, S.C., Romney said Gingrich should release a more detailed account of the ethics investigation to "get out ahead of the general election."

Gingrich has been calling on Romney to quickly release his tax records, and the former House speaker's campaign labeled Romney's move a "panic-attack." It says a vast amount of information from the ethics probe has been public for more than a decade.

On the eve of South Carolina's presidential primary, one of the state's senior politicians says the race has come down to a choice between Romney and Gingrich. Just last week, Sen. Jim DeMint had been predicting a Romney victory.

But South Carolina polls show Gingrich has been narrowing the gap and Romney himself says the race is "neck-and-neck."
