Neighborhood Eats: El Rincon Criollo Caribbean Food

Get a test of every Caribbean island at this spot.

UNIVERSAL CITY - Eldipio Brito is used to constructing things. In 2015, he and wife Alida started to build their dream in Universal City.

"I worked in construction all my life," Brito said. "This here is my dream to show people how the Caribbean Islands eats their food. The authentic food from the island."

Brito is part Puerto Rican and Dominican. His wife is Dominican too. The husband and father of two said they bring a blend of their homeland to their customer's table.

The restaurant is called El Rincon Criollo Caribbean Food. That translates as authentic food on the corner which is where their business is a small strip center.

"We're doing this for love not for business," He said.

The 30-year-old has a menu filled with stuffed potatoes, empanadas, plantains, yuca frita, mofongo, sancoho, conch, ocotopus and much more.

The Britos provided Neighborhood Eats with a Caribbean sampler. They started us off with huge plantains and just a little mayo/ketchup sauce for extra flavor. Good!

Next, we docked our palates on a Cuban sandwich: Roasted pork, ham, sweet cheese and pickles. ¡Qué Rico!

Of course, Neighborhood Eats could not leave the building without the mofongo with slivers of pork and garlic. It comes coupled with the most delicious carne frita. The huge chunks of meat are worth the trip alone.

The taste test ended with a king red snapper deep fried in house seasoning. This fish is so fresh we watched them clean it. It comes topped with peppers. ¡Qué Rico!

El Rincon Criollo Caribbean Food has authentic owners who work hard to serve food from their heart to your table.

That's this week's edition of Neighborhood Eats. If you have a suggestion for Marvin send him an email (Mhurst@kens5.com), tweet (@Mhurstkens5) or post it on his Facebook page. #KENS5EATS
