Man accused of killing, dismembering wife back in custody

Man who dismembered wife found

KERR COUNTY, Texas -- A man accused of killing and dismembering his wife in 1990 is back in custody after he had escaped from a mental hospital facility in San Antonio on Sunday, according to San Antonio police.

Police told KENS 5 the man, Gary Charles Ligon, 62, was found in the 8000 block of City Base Landing on Tuesday morning.

San Antonio police officers said Ligon was cooperative and told them he was hungry but otherwise OK. EMS checked him out, and he was transported back to the hospital.

Ligon was found not guilty by reason of insanity for the murder of his wife, Rebecca Clark Ligon, and was ordered to be held at a maximum security state hospital.

Ligon walked away from a state facility Sunday. His family and law enforcement in Kerr County were concerned about his disappearance.

Ligon was accused of murdering his estranged wife and chopping her body into pieces on June 1, 1990.

He was committed to a state mental hospital after he was tried.

This is reportedly not the first time he escaped, and the Kerr County Sheriff's Office considers him a risk to the public.
