Windcrest police seek driver who fled after hitting officer

A driver is on the run after hitting a police officer in the parking lot of a convenience store on the city's northeast side.

There's a manhunt on for a 19-year-old who hit a police officer in a traffic stop with a truck and kept going.

The officer is from the Windcrest Police Department and is recovering with minor injuries at a local hospital.

According to Windcrest Police Chief Al Ballew, a man and woman were stopped because the truck they were in didn't match the vehicle registered to the license plate.

Two Windcrest officers made the stop in the 4800 block of Walzem Road at a convenience store.

One officer detained the woman while the other tried to do the same with the 19-year-old suspect.

However, things went south.

Police said the suspect tried to wrestle with the officer. The policeman used his Taser but that didn't work. The suspect got into his vehicle smashing into the officer's unit and an innocent bystander's truck before driving away.

Witnesses said the officer was trying to hold on to the truck. They also said he was dragged and hit before the suspect got away.

The 19-year-old on the run faces a charge of aggravated assault of an officer with a deadly weapon. Criminal charges are pending against the woman who was with him.
