SAN ANTONIO - Memorial Day is all about honoring our fallen service members, and the poppy has long been a symbol of remembrance for those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. This year, you can remember your loved one with a special poppy.
Veterans in Waco made poppies in honor of Memorial Day that can be worn in memory of the fallen. You can find those poppies at any local VFW post or American Legion. For Gold Star mom Dr. Carla Sizer, remembering those who died in combat is personal. Her son, SPC Dane Balcon, died fighting in Iraq.
"My son was in the second vehicle driving. They went over an IED. Everyone else was propelled from the vehicle, including my son. A complete fire fight broke out. Black Hawks came in and transported my son. He ultimately died," she said.
This year, USAA launched a virtual poppy wall. Anyone can dedicate a poppy to a loved one who they lost.
"This year, like we've done in the past, we're using the poppy to highlight that remembrance. We're asking folks to wear a poppy and pass a poppy," said John Bird with USAA.
Sizer said it's a touching tribute to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.
"Seeing someone wear the poppy means that they understand, that they're honoring and reflecting," she said.
