Vagrants suspected in cause of early morning house fire, firefighters says

Flames broke out at a home just before 5 a.m. Tuesday in the 700 block of Marshall Road just north of downtown.

SAN ANTONIO - Vagrants are suspected to be the cause of an early morning house fire Tuesday, firefighters said.

The fire took place before 5 a.m. in the 700 block of Marshall Street, just east of Interstate 10.

Robert Ramos and his girlfriend, Melissa, said they awoke to a glow through their bedroom window.  They realized the fence on the side of their home was on fire.  Robert and Melissa were two of seven victims that were able to escape from the fire safely.

Firefighters said the quickly spread to the side of the house and then up to the roof. Firefighters were able to put the fire out as it spread into the attic.

Arson has been called to the scene to investigate the cause of the fire. Firefighters believe vagrants who frequent the area may have discarded a cigarette that accidentally caught the fence on fire or they may have started it intentionally.
