UTSA student drowns while wakeboarding

SAN ANTONIO – A University of Texas at San Antonio student drowned Saturday wakeboarding in a lake in Texas.

According to a GoFundMe page, 19-year-old Dominiq Porterfield was celebrating the last holiday weekend before his junior year began.

Dominiq’s obituary stated he is originally from Virginia where he graduated from Ocean Lakes High School Math & Science Academy in Virginia Beach. His father lives in Texas which lead him to attend UTSA where he worked towards a Business Management Degree.

There will be two services held in honor of Dominiq, one in San Antonio and the second in Virginia.

The San Antonio service will be on Sept. 8 at Porter Loring Mortuary North, according to his obituary. Visitation will be held from 2 p.m. top 4 p.m. with the funeral starting after.

Due to the high costs of two funeral services, a GoFundMe page has been set up. The initial goal was $20,000, however, because of generous donations they doubled their goal in one day.

A scholarship has also been set up in Dominiq’s honor to “VB Education Foundation.” If interested in donating, checks can be mailed to VB Education Foundation, 2512 George Mason Dr., Virginia Beach, VA 23456. Payments can also be accepted online at http://www.vbef.org/or by phone at 757-263-1337.
