Two dead, one hospitalized after car strikes utility pole

FALLS CITY – Two men have died and one hospitalized as a result of a crash that happened Thursday afternoon just south of Falls City.

According to DPS Sergeant Deon Cockrell who investigated the crash, all three men were residents of San Antonio.
 
Michael Anthony Sanchez, 24, was driving a 2008 Kia Rio four-door passenger sedan northbound on U.S. Highway 181 near River Road at about 5:45 p.m. Thursday.
 
For unknown reasons, the car veered off the right shoulder of the roadway and struck a metal utility pole on the right passenger side of the car. Sanchez was transported to University Hospital and is in good condition.
 
The front seat passenger, 35-year-old Refugio Rodriguez, was pronounced dead at the scene by Karnes County Justice of the Peace David Sotello. The rear seat passenger, 28-year-old Albert Anthony Castillo Pina, was transported to Connally Memorial Center in Floresville where he was pronounced dead.
 
As a result of the crash, the north and southbound lanes of the highway were closed in both directions until it was re-opened at 9:05 p.m.
