Tim Duncan memorabilia value rises with retiring of No. 21

Spurs retiring Tim Duncan's Jersey

SAN ANTONIO -- Charlie Dipietro can barely keep Tim Duncan gear on the shelves at his memorabilia shop, Sports Cards Plus.

"His autographed stuff is just going through the roof because Tim doesn't sign as much as he did when he played for the Spurs," Dipietro said.

The long-time memorabilia dealer has rare Tim Duncan basketball cards, shoes he wore during the Olympics and a game worn and signed Spurs Jersey, but that's about it.

"He was underappreciated until a few years ago and then all of the sudden people decided, hey, we need to start collecting Tim Duncan and so all his stuff jumped up in the last couple years," Dipietro said.

Then Duncan retired and Dipietro said No. 21 gear spiked in value again.

Now, with the Spurs announcing they'll retire his Jersey in December, Dipietro said those prices could rise again.

"The people who sell jerseys, the people who sell cards, memorabilia will all be looking for Tim Duncan.”

It's not all about the money for this West Side native. After David Robinson, no other Spur holds a higher place in his heart than Duncan.

"Tim Duncan really meant a lot to San Antonio, because he brought us the championships," Dipietro said.
